Principal’s Message

I know we all want Woodsboro to be a safe and pleasant place to learn and play. This past week we had an excellent assembly by John Abrahms called “The Bully Game.” In a fun and exciting way Mr. Abrahms taught our Grade 1-6 students how to avoid being a bully, and what to do when encountering unfriendly actions from others. Be sure to ask your students about the assembly. You can help reinforce their learning by asking, “What is bullying?”, “What is the difference between tattling and telling?”, “How can we stop harmful gossip?”, and “How can you be a good friend and witness, instead of just a bystander.” Mr. Abrams used a mixture of humor and magic to teach these important lessons. Thanks to the Woodsboro PTA for helping to sponsor this assembly.

Thanks also for the Kleenex donations and Library volunteers! We still need one or two parents to help out with the Buzz Bee’s Store about once a month.

Make sure your opinions are counted! Take the parent survey online before Friday, February 9th.  As parents and guardians, your feedback is extremely important and will help PYLUSD, as well as Woodsboro, improve our programs.

To access this year’s parent survey, follow this link: www.surveymonkey.com/r/PYLUSDParents

The survey will only take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Students in grades 3 and 5 will also be surveyed for their opinions. More information will be coming in February.

2017-18 Outdoor Science School Update #3

We are on track for our Outdoor Science School program. Sixth Grade students will be attending at Camp Cedar Crest in the San Bernardino Mountains from January 9-12. Students who do not attend Science Camp will attend regular school on these days. Thanks to everyone who has made donations and participated in fundraisers. Please remember to follow-up on your pledges as our actual funds are still short.

It is important now that you go over the camp checklist with your 6th grade student and make sure everything will be purchased, packed, and ready to go by Monday night, January 8th.  The checklist may be downloaded by clicking on the link at the end of this article. Label all belongings with your student’s name. While this may seem redundant, every year there are items reported lost, so labeling every item is recommended.  If using plastic bags for your student’s sleeping bag, please double or triple bag. Also please familiarize your children with what you have packed for them as students will not know what has been lost if they aren’t aware of what they have.  Label the two allowable luggage items with “Name” and “Woodsboro.”  This is also necessary as we will be attending camp with another school, Glenknoll Elementary.
On Tuesday, January 9th, the second day after Winter Break, sixth grade students should arrive by 7:30 am to check in at the flag pole in front of the school with their sleeping bag and clothes bag. Students can say their goodbyes and report to the lunch tables. Parents are not required to stay.
Students will need to be dressed warmly and take their jacket on the bus with them. They may bring a recyclable water bottle but no food or gum on the bus. Remind them that it will be a two hour drive with no rest stops, and to drink sparingly. Do not park in the valet drop off area, as it will be very congested by 7:35 am. 6th Grade students will wait at the lunch tables. They will be called in a few at time for a health check and to have temperatures taken. Students who are ill or have a fever will not be able to attend.
Questions about balances should be directed to Shirley Van Dyke at djsovandyke@alumni.usc.edu.  For any special needs or other questions, contact Principal Douglas Slonkosky at dslonkosky@pylusd.org.
Medication
Do not include medication of any kind in your child’s luggage. This means no over-the-counter medications, allergy pills, etc. It is important that all medication is accounted for and arrangements made before Winter Break. If you have questions about camp forms, medical forms, sending medicine to camp, or if your child is prescribed medication during Winter Break, contact the school or Michelle Grimsley at mgrimsley@pylusd.org. Remember there is a Registered Nurse or EMT on staff at camp, and they will be able to dispense basic over-the-counter medication, as well as the prescribed medication that you send to camp with doctor’s orders. Students may not have any medication in their possession.
Letters from Home
Students love to receive mail at camp. In order for mail to arrive on time, you should send it by Tuesday, December 26th. Please do not send food, candy, or gum as students will not be allowed to have these items at camp.
Address mail as follows:
Student’s Name
Woodsboro Elementary
ECOS Institute
PO Box 8517
Green Valley, CA 92341

Weather
Cold weather, rain, and snow are always possibilities in the mountains. Current temperatures are a high of 43’ and low temperatures at night are below freezing. Please consult the clothing list carefully. Also please note the items that are prohibited. The nearest community with weather information is Green Valley Lake. You can see current conditions on web cams at http://www.green-valley-lake.com/webcams/.  The District Transportation Office checks with the California Highway Patrol before the busses leave to determine that road conditions are safe. If roads are not clear, the departure may be delayed or rescheduled. The bus drivers are certified for mountain driving, and carry chains in the event of sudden weather changes.

Behavior
We are proud of our Woodsboro students, and the camp staff always congratulates our teachers on their good behavior at camp. Your child signed a Behavior Contract that was discussed and signed with you. It outlines the camp procedures for behavior. Please return this contract to your child’s teacher if you have not already done so. Remember, all school rules also apply at camp. Cameras are allowed at camp, but not cell phones. Cell phones may not be used as a camera. While every effort is made to help students keep track of belongings, do not send an expensive, irreplaceable camera. You may want to send a “disposable” camera. Please email a couple of your child’s best camp pictures to dslonkosky@pylusd.org for use in the class slide show.

Communications
You will be notified by email and text (if you have a text number on file) when the students arrive safely at camp on Tuesday, and on Friday when they are about 30 minutes from school.  Students usually arrive back at school sometime between noon and 1:30 pm on Friday. If there are traffic delays, you will be notified by email and text. At that time, you should plan to pick up your child and their baggage at school. They will not have had lunch, and they will be hungry! However, you must sign your student out of school. Sign-out sheets will be made available outside in the lunch area and not in the school lobby. Students cannot be picked up by another parent, unless you have made prior arrangements in writing with the school office.

In the event of an emergency at home while your child is at camp, contact the school by phone or the principal by email. Although standard cell phones usually do not work in the mountains, we have several ways of contacting camp in an emergency.

Principal’s Message

Walk to Read at Woodsboro

This year, our district has adopted a new Reading Diagnostic Program called i-Ready. Students take a diagnostic test 3 times a year, and the results give teachers important information regarding each student’s reading skills. Using the results, students will work in groups designed to meet their immediate needs, whether they need more challenging activities, remedial assistance, or English Language Development. Students may “walk” to another classroom for 30 minutes a day for this specialized instruction.

In conjunction with this diagnostic test, Woodsboro Elementary is piloting a new on-line reading program, also from i-Ready. This component will provide added on-line instruction for all students at their individual ability levels. Students will use the program about 45 minutes a week to increase their phonics, reading, and/or comprehension abilities, depending upon their reading level. If the pilot is successful, Woodsboro will seek funding to continue the program.

New Teacher at Woodsboro
Woodsboro would like to welcome Mr. Tarek Hassoun, who transferred last week from Travis Ranch School, where he was a Resource Specialist. He will be creating our First Grade Special Day Class (SDC). Our Primary Grade 1-3 SDC class had become too large and has been split with Mr. Munguia teaching grades 2 and 3. Mr. Hassoun is a former SDC teacher with 12 years of experience in teaching grades K-12.  He is originally from Salem, Oregon, and graduated from Oregon State University. He has a master’s degree from Sierra Nevada College in Lake Tahoe.

School Site Council (SSC)
The School Site Council consists of elected representatives of the teaching staff, classified staff, parents, and community. Its responsibilities include providing input for the annual goals of the school and reviewing the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) (including the Woodsboro school budget). The SSC recommends the LCAP to the PYLUSD governing board. I would like to thank each parent who offered their service to our school by accepting a nomination to the Woodsboro School Site Council. Mr. Rick Gramer was elected to fill the open position of a two year term, 2017 – 2019. The next School Site Council Meeting will be held on November 8, at 2:45 in the MPR. All members of the Woodsboro Community are invited to attend the meetings.

Daylight Saving Time Ends Nov 5. Set your clocks back one hour.

We are hoping to have even more this year! The deadline is October 20 and students can find more information on our Reflections Poster in the hallway, or on the flier that was sent home.
